Denumirea comună blenny este în cel mai bun caz ambiguă, deoarece a fost aplicată mai multor familii de pești marini percabili, brânci și câțiva pești de apă dulce, care împărtășesc aceeași morfologie și un comportament similar. Există șase familii considerate "adevărate blenni", toate grupate sub subordinea Blennioidei; membrii săi sunt numiți blennioizi. Există aproximativ 833 de specii în 130 de genuri în cadrul subordonării. Blenny din Timorul de Est Blennioids sunt, în general, pești mici, cu corpuri alungite, ochi și guri relativ mari. Aripile lor dorsale sunt adesea continue și lungi; aripioarele pelvine au în mod obișnuit un coloană unică încorporată și sunt scurte și subțiri, situate înaintea aripioarelor pectorale. Aripile coadă sunt rotunjite. Capetele blunt de blennioids posedă adesea structuri de tip whisker elaborate numite cirri. Ca pești bentonici în general, blennioții își petrec multă vreme pe sau lângă podeaua mării; mulți sunt reclusivi și se pot năpusti în substraturi nisipoase sau pot trăi crăpăturile în recife, în zonele inferioare ale râurilor sau chiar în cochilii goale de moluște.
