Calorimetria este știința sau actul de măsurare a modificărilor parametrilor reacțiilor chimice, a schimbărilor fizice și a tranzițiilor de fază, în scopul obținerii transferului de căldură sau de căldură asociat acestor modificări. Calorimetria se efectuează cu un calorimetru. Cuvântul calorimetrie este derivat din cuvântul latin calor, care înseamnă căldură și cuvântul grecesc μεττρον, adică măsură. Medicul scotian și omul de știință Joseph Black, care a fost primul care a recunoscut distincția dintre căldură și temperatură, se spune că este fondatorul științei calorimetriei. Calorimetria indirectă calculează căldura produsă de organismele vii prin măsurarea fie a producției lor de dioxid de carbon și a deșeurilor de azot, fie din consumul lor de oxigen. Lavoisier remarcă în 1780 că producția de căldură poate fi prezisă din consumul de oxigen în acest fel, folosind regresia multiplă. Teoria bugetului dinamic al energiei explică de ce această procedură este corectă. Căldura generată de organismele vii poate fi, de asemenea, măsurată prin calorimetrie directă, în care întregul organism este plasat în interiorul calorimetrului pentru măsurare.

Calorimetry is the science or act of measuring changes in parameters of chemical reactions, physical changes and phase transitions, for the purpose of deriving the heat or heat transfer associated with those changes. Calorimetry is performed with a calorimeter. The word calorimetry is derived from the Latin word calor, meaning heat and the Greek word μέτρον, meaning measure. Scottish physician and scientist Joseph Black, who was the first to recognize the distinction between heat and temperature, is said to be the founder of the science of calorimetry. Indirect calorimetry calculates heat that living organisms produce by measuring either their production of carbon dioxide and nitrogen waste, or from their consumption of oxygen. Lavoisier noted in 1780 that heat production can be predicted from oxygen consumption this way, using multiple regression. The Dynamic Energy Budget theory explains why this procedure is correct. Heat generated by living organisms may also be measured by direct calorimetry, in which the entire organism is placed inside the calorimeter for the measurement.
