Polul nordic și sudic ceresc sunt cele două puncte imaginare de pe cer, unde axa de rotație a Pământului, pe termen nelimitat, intersectează sfera rotativă imaginară a stelelor, numită sfera cerească. Stâlpii celesti nordici și de sud apar permanent direct deasupra capului unui observator de la Polul Nord al Pământului și respectiv de la Polul Sud. Pe măsură ce Pământul se învârte pe axa sa, cei doi poli celesti rămân fixați pe cer și toate celelalte puncte par să se rotească în jurul lor, completând un circuit pe zi. Stâlpii celesti sunt, de asemenea, poli ai sistemului de coordonate eterogene celesti, ceea ce inseamna ca au declinari de +90 grade si -90 grade. Stâlpii celesti nu rămân permanent fixați pe fundalul stelelor. Din cauza unui fenomen cunoscut sub numele de precesiunea echinocțiilor, polii urmăresc cercuri pe sfera cerească, cu o perioadă de aproximativ 25.700 de ani. Axa Pământului este, de asemenea, supusă altor mișcări complexe care determină mișcarea ușoară a poliilor celesti în cicluri de lungimi diferite; a se vedea nutation, mișcarea polară și înclinarea axială.
