Un Cepheid este o stea care variază între o stare mai mare, mai luminoasă și una mai mică și mai densă. Ele sunt stele foarte variabile, de o clasă care a fost deosebit de masivă și fierbinte, consumând mai devreme combustibilul, lăsându-le în această stare pulsantă. Relația puternică directă dintre luminozitatea variabilei Cepheid și perioada de pulsație asigură pentru Cepheids statutul de indicator important al distanței pentru stabilirea scalelor de distanță galactice și extragalactice. Cepheid variabilele sunt împărțite în mai multe subclase care prezintă mase diferite, vârste și istorii evolutive: Cepheide clasice, Cepheids de tip II, Cepheids anomali și Cepheids pitici. Termenul cefaid provine de la Delta Cephei în constelația Cepheus, prima stea de acest tip identificată de John Goodricke în 1784. Delta Cephei are o importanță deosebită și ca calibrator al relației Cepheid-luminozitate-perioadă, deoarece distanța sa este printre cele mai tocmai pentru un Cepheid, datorită în parte apartenenței sale la un grup de stele și disponibilității unor paralelaxe Hubble Space Telescope / Hipparcos.
