Cheyne-Stokes respiration / tʃeɪnstoʊks / este un model anormal de respirație caracterizat printr-o respirație progresivă mai adâncă și uneori mai rapidă, urmată de o scădere treptată care are ca rezultat oprirea temporară a respirației numită apnee. Modelul se repetă, fiecare ciclu durează de obicei 30 de secunde până la 2 minute. Este o oscilație a ventilației între apnee și hiperpneea cu un model crescendo-diminuendo și este asociată cu schimbarea presiunii parțiale serice a oxigenului și a dioxidului de carbon. Respirația Cheyne-Stokes și respirația periodică sunt cele două regiuni pe un spectru de severitate a volumului oscilator al mișcării. Distincția constă în ceea ce se observă la nivelul jgheabului de ventilație: respirația Cheyne-Stokes implică apnee, în timp ce respirația periodică implică hipopnee. Aceste fenomene pot apărea în timpul starea de veghe sau în timpul somnului, unde se numesc sindromul de apnee în somn central. Poate fi cauzată de deteriorarea centrelor respiratorii sau de anomalii fiziologice în insuficiența cardiacă cronică și este observată și la nou-născuți cu sisteme respiratorii imature și la vizitatori noi la altitudini mari.
