Channel Tunnel
Tunelul de pe Canalul Mânecii este un tunel de cale ferată de 50,5 kilometri care leagă Folkestone, Kent, în Regatul Unit, de Coquelles, Pas-de-Calais, lângă Calais, în nordul Franței, sub Canalul Mânecii din Strâmtoarea Dover. La cel mai de jos punct este adâncit de 75 m. La 37,9 kilometri, tunelul are cea mai lungă porțiune submarină a oricărui tunel din lume, deși tunelul Seikan din Japonia are o durată de cel puțin 53,85 kilometri și mai adânc la 240 de metri sub nivelul mării. Tunelul transportă trenurile de pasageri Eurostar de mare viteză, naveta Eurotunnel pentru autoturisme și alte vehicule rutiere - cel mai mare astfel de transport în trenurile internaționale și internaționale de transport feroviar de marfă. Tunelul se conectează de la capăt la cap cu liniile ferate LGV Nord și High Speed 1 de mare viteză. Ideile pentru o legătură fixă transversală a canalului au apărut încă din 1802, dar presiunile politice și presei britanice asupra securității naționale compromise au încetat să încerce să construiască un tunel.
