Școala clasică
În criminologie, Școala clasică se referă, de obicei, la lucrarea din secolul al XVIII-lea în timpul Iluminismului de către filozofii utilitari și sociali, Jeremy Bentham și Cesare Beccaria. Interesele lor se regăsesc în sistemul justiției penale și al penologiei și, indirect, prin propunerea că "omul este un animal de calcul", în cauzele comportamentului criminal. Școala clasică de gândire a fost bazată pe ideea că oamenii au libertatea de a lua decizii și că pedeapsa poate fi un factor de descurajare a criminalității, atâta timp cât pedeapsa este proporțională, se potrivește cu infracțiunea și se desfășoară prompt.
