Comodificarea este transformarea bunurilor și a serviciilor, precum și a ideilor sau a altor entități care în mod normal nu pot fi considerate bunuri, într-o marfă. Înțelegerea marxistă a mărfurilor este distinctă de semnificația mărfurilor în teoria de afaceri de bază. O modalitate de a rezuma diferența este aceea că commoditization-ul se referă la faptul că lucrurile de proprietate devin generice, în timp ce commodification-ul se referă la lucruri nesănătoase devenind salable. Mărfurile au jucat un rol-cheie în întreaga activitate a lui Marx, el a considerat-o o formă celulară a capitalismului și un punct de plecare esențial pentru o analiză a acestui sistem politico-economic. Cea mai timpurie utilizare a cuvântului "commodification" în limba engleză, atestată în Dicționarul englezesc Oxford, datează din 1975. Utilizarea conceptului de commodification a devenit comună cu creșterea analizei discursului critic în semiotică.
