Cryoconite
Cryoconite este un praf prafuit de vânt, produs dintr-o combinație de mici particule de rocă, funingine și microbi, care este depozitat și se acumulează pe zăpadă, pe ghețari sau pe gheață. Întunecarea, în special din cantități mici de funingine, absoarbe radiațiile solare care topesc zăpada sau gheața sub depozit și uneori creează o gaură crioconită. Crioconitul poate conține praf din deșerturile sau terenurile continentale îndepărtate, particulele de la erupțiile vulcanice sau emisiile din centralele electrice și funinginea. Acesta a fost descris pentru prima oară și numit de Nils A. E. Nordenskiöld când a călătorit pe ghețarul Groenlandei în 1870. În timpul verii, găurile de crioconiți conțin adesea apă lichidă și astfel oferă o nișă pentru microorganismele adaptate la rece, cum ar fi bacteriile și algele, care să prospere. Funcția de funingine scade reflexia, sau albedo de gheață, crescând absorbția căldurii. Crioconitul este adăugat în mod constant la zăpadă și formațiuni de gheață împreună cu zăpada.
