Demonologia este studiul sistematic al demonilor sau credințelor despre demoni. Este ramura teologiei referitoare la ființele supranaturale care nu sunt zei. Se ocupă atât de ființe binevoitoare care nu au un cerc de închinători, nici un cerc atât de limitat încât să fie sub rangul de zei și cu ființe răutăcioase de tot felul. Sensul inițial al "demonului", din vremea lui Homer, a fost o ființă binevoitoare, însă în limba engleză numele poartă acum conotații de răutate. Demonii, considerați ca spirite, pot aparține oricărei clase de spirite recunoscute de animismul primitiv; adică, ele pot fi suflete separabile umane sau ne-umane sau spirite care nu au locuit niciodată în corp. O distincție clară se face deseori între aceste două clase, în special de Melanesians, mai multe grupuri africane și altele; Jinn arab, de exemplu, nu pot fi reduse la sufletele umane modificate; în același timp, aceste clase sunt adesea concepute ca producând rezultate identice, de ex. boli. Demonology is the systematic study of demons or beliefs about demons. It is the branch of theology relating to supernatural beings who are not gods. It deals both with benevolent beings that have no circle of worshippers or so limited a circle as to be below the rank of gods, and with malevolent beings of all kinds. The original sense of "demon", from the time of Homer onward, was a benevolent being, but in English the name now holds connotations of malevolence. Demons, when regarded as spirits, may belong to either of the classes of spirits recognized by primitive animism; that is to say, they may be human, or non-human, separable souls, or discarnate spirits which have never inhabited a body. A sharp distinction is often drawn between these two classes, notably by the Melanesians, several African groups, and others; the Arab jinn, for example, are not reducible to modified human souls; at the same time these classes are frequently conceived as producing identical results, e.g. diseases. The word demonology is from Greek δαίμooν, daimōn, "divinity, divine power, god"; and -λογία, -logia.
