Un densitometru este un dispozitiv care măsoară gradul de întuneric al unui material fotografic sau semipreparat sau al unei suprafețe reflectante. Densitometrul este în principiu o sursă de lumină care vizează o celulă fotoelectrică. Acesta determină densitatea unui eșantion plasat între sursa de lumină și celula fotoelectrică din diferențele dintre citiri. Densitometrele moderne au aceleași componente, dar au și circuite integrate electronice pentru o citire mai bună. Există două tipuri: ▪ Densitometre de transmisie care măsoară materiale transparente ▪ Densitometre de reflecție care măsoară lumina reflectată de o suprafață. Unele tipuri moderne de fabricație germană sunt capabile de ambele tipuri de măsurători selectabile de un comutator. Ele sunt folosite în fotografierea filmului pentru a măsura densitățile negativelor cu comutatorul în poziția "T" și saturația unei imprimări rezultate în poziția "R". Astfel de măsurători permit fotografului să aleagă hârtia fotografică potrivită și expunerea corectă, evitând experimentele cu benzi de testare. Odată ce hârtiile și camera întunecată au fost calibrate, prima imprimare dintr-un negativ măsurat anterior este un succes deodată.
