Etimologia sa derivă din Darbanul persan ("poarta încuiată" ), cunoscuta arabilor ca Bâb al Abwab ("Poarta Portilor") si turcii ca Demirkapı ("Iron Gate") este un oras din Republica Dagestan, Rusia, situat in Marea Caspica, la nord de Azerbaijani este cel mai sudic oraș din Rusia și este cel de-al doilea cel mai important oraș al Daghestanului: Populația: 119,200 (recensământul din 2010), 101,031 (Recensământul din 2002), 78,371 (Recensământul din 1989), Derbent ocupă poarta îngustă dintre Marea Caspică și Munții Caucaz care leagă stepele eurasiave spre nord și spre Orientul Mijlociu către sud. Deseori identificat cu legendarul Porți al lui Alexandru, Derbent pretinde a fi cel mai vechi oraș din Rusia (secolul al VIII-lea î.Hr.) De la antichitate, valoarea zonă ca poarta spre Ca ucasus a fost înțeles, iar Derbent are structuri arheologice de peste 5000 de ani.
