Un doctorat este un grad academic sau un grad profesional care, în majoritatea țărilor, îi conferă titularului dreptul de a preda la nivel universitar în domeniul specific sau de a lucra într-o anumită profesie. În timp ce structura programelor doctorale americane este mai formală și mai complexă decât în alte sisteme, doctoratul de cercetare nu este acordat pentru studiul preliminar avansat care conduce la candidatura la doctorat, ci mai degrabă pentru finalizarea și apărarea cu succes a cercetării independente prezentate sub forma teza de doctorat.
