Doublethink este actul oamenilor obișnuiți care acceptă simultan două convingeri reciproc contradictorii ca fiind corecte, adesea în contexte sociale distincte. Doublethink este legat de, dar diferă de, ipocrizie și neutralitate. Oarecum înrudită, dar aproape opusă este disonanța cognitivă, unde credințele contradictorii provoacă conflicte în mintea omului. Doublethink este notabil din cauza lipsei de disonanță cognitivă - astfel, persoana este total conștientă de orice conflict sau contradicție.
