Teoria elastic-rebound
Teoria elastică de recul este o explicație a modului în care energia este răspândită în timpul cutremurelor. Pe măsură ce pietrele de pe părțile opuse ale unei defecțiuni sunt supuse forței și schimbării, ele acumulează energie și se deformează încet până când puterea lor internă este depășită. În acel moment, se produce o mișcare bruscă de-a lungul vicii, eliberând energia acumulată, iar rocile se întorc înapoi în forma lor nedeformată. În geologie, teoria elasticului de rebound a fost prima teorie care explică în mod satisfăcător cutremurele. Anterior se credea că rupturile suprafeței au fost rezultatul unei agitări puternice a terenului, mai degrabă decât contrariul sugerat de această teorie. Explicațiile culturale antice ale cutremurelor erau adesea în concordanță cu japonezii mei japonezi Namazu: un somn gigant cu insulele Japoniei pe spatele lui.
