Alborz
Alborz este un lanț montan din nordul Iranului care se întinde de la granițele Azerbaidjanului și Armeniei, în nord-vest până la capătul sudic al Mării Caspice, și se termină în est la granițele Turkmenistanului și Afganistanului. Cel mai înalt munte din Asia de Vest, muntele Damavand, Amol, Mazandaran este situat în zonă. Gama de munte Alborz formează o barieră între platoul sud-caspian și platoul Qazvin-Teheran. Are doar 60-130 km lățime și este alcătuită din serii sedimentare care se datorează de la Devonian până la Oligocen, predominant calcar jurasic peste un miez de granit. Înălțimile sale înalte, în ecoregiunea de stepă din pădurea Elburz, sunt aride cu puțini copaci, dar pantele nordice ale acestora, în ecoregiunea pădurilor mixte hipicene hipicene, sunt luxuriante și împădurite. Zoroastrienii pot identifica intervalul cu locul locuinței Peshyotanului, iar secta Zoroastrian Ilm-e-Kshnoom identifică Muntele Davamand ca fiind casa lui Saheb-e-Dilan ("Maeștrii Inimii"). În epica sa Shahnameh, poetul Ferdowsi vorbește despre munți "ca și cum ar fi fost în India.
