Electrojet
Un electrometru este un curent electric care se deplasează în jurul regiunii E a ionosferei Pământului. Există două electrojets: deasupra ecuatorului magnetic și în apropierea Cercurilor polare nordice și sudice. Electrojetrele sunt curenți de Hall purtați în principal de electroni la altitudini de la 100 la 150 km. În această regiune, frecvența giroscopului de electroni este mult mai mare decât frecvența de coliziune neutră la electroni. În contrast, ionii principali ai regiunii E au frecvențe giroscoape mult mai mici decât frecvența de coliziune neutră din punct de vedere ionic. Kristian Birkeland a fost primul care a sugerat că curenții polari electrici sunt conectați la un sistem de filamente care curg de-a lungul liniilor câmpului geomagnetic în și în afara regiunii polare.
