Empirism
Empirismul este o teorie care afirmă că cunoașterea vine numai sau în primul rând din experiența senzorială. Una dintre mai multe vederi ale epistemologiei, studiul cunoașterii umane, împreună cu raționalismul și scepticismul, empirismul subliniază rolul experienței și dovezilor, în special experiența senzorială, în formarea ideilor, asupra noțiunii de idei sau tradiții înnăscute; empiriciștii pot argumenta totuși că tradițiile apar din cauza relațiilor de experiențe anterioare. Empirismul în filosofia științei accentuează dovezile, în special așa cum au fost descoperite în experimente. Este o parte fundamentală a metodei științifice că toate ipotezele și teoriile trebuie să fie testate împotriva observațiilor lumii naturale, mai degrabă decât să se bazeze exclusiv pe raționamentul, a intuiției sau a revelației a priori. Empirismul, folosit adesea de oamenii de știință naturală, afirmă că "cunoașterea se bazează pe experiență" și că "cunoașterea este tentativă și probabilistică, supusă revizuirii și falsificării continue". Unul dintre principiile epistemologice este că experiența senzorială creează cunoștințe. Metoda științifică, inclusiv experimentele și instrumentele validate de măsurare, ghidează cercetarea empirică.
