Mișcarea epeirogenică
În geologie, mișcarea epeirogenică se referă la răsturnări sau depresiuni ale pământului care prezintă lungimi de undă lungi și care se îndoiesc puțin de undurile largi. Lărgurile centrale ale continentelor sunt numite cratoane și sunt supuse epeirogeniei. Mișcarea poate fi una de scăpare spre, sau ridicare de la centrul Pământului. Mișcarea este cauzată de un set de forțe care acționează de-a lungul unei raze a Pământului, cum ar fi cele care contribuie la isostasie și defecțiuni în litosferă. Mișcarea epeirogenică poate fi permanentă sau tranzitorie. Creșterea tranzitorie poate apărea în urma unei anomalii termice datorată convecției mantalei anormal de calde și dispare atunci când convecția scade. Perfecționarea permanentă poate apărea atunci când materialul igneos este injectat în crustă, iar ridicarea structurală circulară sau eliptică pe o rază mare este o caracteristică a unui strat de manta. Mișcarea epeirogenă a cauzat ridicarea regiunii sudice Rocky Mountain de la 1300 la 2000 m de la Eocen. Acest lucru a urmat și se deosebește de crearea Munților Stâncoși în timpul Oramenului Laramid în timpul Cenozoicului târziu cretacic.
