Excimer
Un excimer este o moleculă dimerică sau heterodimerică cu durată scurtă de viață formată din două specii, dintre care cel puțin unul a umplut complet cochilia de valență cu electroni. În acest caz, formarea moleculei este posibilă numai dacă un astfel de atom este într-o stare excitată electronic. Moleculele și moleculele heteroonucleare care au mai mult de două specii sunt de asemenea numite molecule exciplex. Excimerele sunt adesea diatomice și sunt compuse din doi atomi sau molecule care nu s-ar lega dacă ambele sunt în starea de bază. Durata de viață a unui excimer este foarte scurtă, de ordinul nanosecundelor. Legarea unui număr mai mare de atomi excitați formează grupuri de materii Rydberg, a căror durată de viață poate depăși multe secunde.
