Fluorescența este emisia de lumină de către o substanță care a absorbit lumină sau altă radiație electromagnetică. De asemenea, se întâmplă atunci când moleculele sunt excitate la stări electronice mai mari prin bombardarea cu energie electrică, cum ar fi, de exemplu, în aurora naturală, în explozii nucleare de mare altitudine și în experimentele cu pistoale cu rachete electronice.
