În chimie, un radical este un atom, o moleculă sau un ion care are electroni de valență nepereche sau o coajă electronică deschisă și, prin urmare, poate fi văzută ca având una sau mai multe legături covalente "încurcate". Cu unele excepții, aceste legături "dangling" fac ca radicalii liberi să reacționeze foarte chimic față de alte substanțe sau chiar față de ei înșiși: moleculele lor vor diminua adesea spontan sau vor polimera dacă vin în contact unul cu celălalt. Majoritatea radicalilor sunt stabili în mod rezonabil numai la concentrații foarte scăzute în mediu inert sau în vid. Un exemplu notabil al unui radical liber este radicalul hidroxil, o moleculă care este un atom de hidrogen sub o moleculă de apă și are astfel o legătură "încurcată" de oxigen. Alte două exemple sunt molecula de carben, care are două legături învechite; și anionul superoxid, molecula de oxigen O2 cu un electron suplimentar, care are o singură legătură. Pe de altă parte, anionul hidroxilic, anionul de oxid și cationul de carbeniu nu sunt radicali, deoarece legăturile care pot părea că se încurcă sunt de fapt rezolvate prin adăugarea sau îndepărtarea electronilor.

In chemistry, a radical is an atom, molecule, or ion that has unpaired valence electrons or an open electron shell, and therefore may be seen as having one or more "dangling" covalent bonds. With some exceptions, these "dangling" bonds make free radicals highly chemically reactive towards other substances, or even towards themselves: their molecules will often spontaneously dimerize or polymerize if they come in contact with each other. Most radicals are reasonably stable only at very low concentrations in inert media or in a vacuum. A notable example of a free radical is the hydroxyl radical, a molecule that is one hydrogen atom short of a water molecule and thus has one bond "dangling" from the oxygen. Two other examples are the carbene molecule, which has two dangling bonds; and the superoxide anion, the oxygen molecule O 2 with one extra electron, which has one dangling bond. On the other hand, the hydroxyl anion, the oxide anion and the carbenium cation are not radicals, since the bonds that may appear to be dangling are in fact resolved by the addition or removal of electrons.
