Protocolul de transfer de fișiere este un protocol de rețea standard folosit pentru a transfera fișierele de pe computer de la o gazdă la alta gazdă printr-o rețea bazată pe TCP, cum ar fi Internetul. FTP este construit pe o arhitectură client-server și utilizează conexiuni separate de control și de date între client și server. Utilizatorii FTP se pot autentifica utilizând un protocol de semnătură clară, în mod normal sub forma unui nume de utilizator și a unei parole, dar se pot conecta anonim dacă serverul este configurat să o permită.
