Inginerie genetica
Ingineria genetică, numită și modificarea genetică, este manipularea directă a genomului unui organism folosind biotehnologia. ADN nou poate fi inserat în genomul gazdei prin izolarea și copierea materialului genetic de interes prin utilizarea metodelor de donare moleculară pentru a genera o secvență ADN sau pentru a sintetiza ADN-ul și apoi a introduce acest construct în organismul gazdă. Genele pot fi îndepărtate sau "scoase", utilizând o nuclează. Direcționarea genetică este o tehnică diferită care utilizează recombinarea omologică pentru a schimba o genă endogenă și poate fi utilizată pentru a șterge o genă, a elimina exonii, a adăuga o genă sau a introduce mutații punctuale. Un organism care este generat prin ingineria genetică este considerat a fi un organism modificat genetic. Primele OMG-uri au fost bacterii în 1973 și șoarecii GM au fost generați în 1974. Bacteriile producătoare de insulină au fost comercializate în 1982, iar produsele alimentare modificate genetic au fost vândute din 1994. Glofish, primul OMG proiectat ca animal de companie, a fost vândut pentru prima oară în Statele Unite Decembrie 2003. Tehnicile de inginerie genetică au fost aplicate în numeroase domenii, printre care cercetarea, agricultura, biotehnologia industrială și medicina.
