Genetica este studiul genelor, eredității și variațiilor în organismele vii. Acesta este, în general, considerat un domeniu al biologiei, dar intersectează frecvent cu multe dintre științele vieții și este strâns legat de studiul sistemelor informatice. Tatăl geneticii este Gregor Mendel, un om de știință monah-austriac. Mendel a studiat "mostenirea traitului", tipare în modul în care au fost trasate trăsăturile de la părinți la urmași. El a observat că organismele moștenesc trăsături prin intermediul unor "unități de moștenire" discrete. Acest termen, folosit încă astăzi, este o definiție oarecum ambiguă a ceea ce se numește o genă. Mecanismul de moștenire și moștenirea moleculară a genelor sunt încă un principiu primar al geneticii în secolul 21, dar genetica modernă sa extins dincolo de moștenire, studiind funcția și comportamentul genelor.
