Geografia este un domeniu de știință dedicat studierii terenurilor, trăsăturilor, locuitorilor și fenomenelor Pământului. O traducere literală ar fi "de a descrie sau de a scrie despre Pământ". Prima persoană care a folosit cuvântul "geografie" a fost Eratosthenes. Patru tradiții istorice în cercetarea geografică sunt analiza spațială a fenomenelor naturale și umane, studiile de zonă, studiul relației om-terestru și cercetarea în științele pământului. Cu toate acestea, geografia modernă este o disciplină cuprinzătoare, care caută în primul rând să înțeleagă Pământul și toate complexitățile sale umane și naturale - nu numai în cazul în care sunt obiecte ci cum s-au schimbat și au ajuns să fie.
