În rinichi, o structură tubulară numită nefron filtrează sânge pentru a forma urină. La începutul nefronului, glomerulus / ɡlɒmɛrələs / este o rețea de capilare care efectuează primul pas de filtrare a sângelui. Glomerul este înconjurat de capsula lui Bowman. Plasma din sânge este filtrată prin capilarele glomerulei în capsula lui Bowman. Capsula lui Bowman îndepărtează filtratul într-un tubular care face parte și din nefron. Un glomerul primeste aportul de sange de la un arteriol aferent al circulatiei renale. Spre deosebire de majoritatea celorlalte paturi capilare, glomerulul se scurge într-un arteriol eferent, mai degrabă decât un venule. Rezistența acestor arteriole duce la o presiune ridicată în glomerul, ajutând la procesul de ultrafiltrare, unde fluidele și materialele solubile din sânge sunt forțate să iasă din capilare și în capsula lui Bowman. Un glomerul și capsula lui Bowman înconjurătoare constituie un corpuscul renal, unitatea de bază de filtrare a rinichiului. Rata la care sângele este filtrat prin toate glomerulele și deci măsura funcției renale totale este rata de filtrare glomerulară.
