Harzul este cea mai înaltă zonă montană din nordul Germaniei și terenul său accidentat se întinde peste părți din Saxonia Inferioară, Saxonia-Anhalt și Turingia. Denumirea Harz derivă din cuvântul de înaltă limbă germană Hardt sau Hart (pădure montană), latinizat ca Hercynia. Legendarul Brocken este cel mai înalt vârf din Harz, cu o înălțime de 1.141,1 metri (3744 ft) deasupra nivelului mării. Wurmberg (971 de metri (3 186 ft)) este cel mai înalt vârf situat în întregime în Saxonia Inferioară.
