Heuristic se referă la tehnici bazate pe experiență pentru rezolvarea problemelor, învățarea și descoperirea care dau o soluție care nu este garantată ca fiind optimă. În cazul în care căutarea exhaustivă este impracticabilă, metodele euristice sunt folosite pentru a accelera procesul de găsire a unei soluții satisfăcătoare prin comenzi rapide mentale pentru a ușura sarcina cognitivă de a lua o decizie. Exemplele acestei metode includ utilizarea unei reguli de bază, o estimare educată, o judecată intuitivă, stereotipuri sau bun-simț. În termeni mai exacți, euristicile sunt strategii care utilizează informații ușor accesibile, deși puțin aplicabile, pentru a controla rezolvarea problemelor la ființele umane și la mașini.
