Drepturile omului sunt principii morale care stabilesc anumite standarde ale comportamentului uman și sunt în mod regulat protejate ca drepturi legale în dreptul intern și internațional. Ele sunt "în mod obișnuit înțelese drept drepturi fundamentale inalienabile la care o persoană are dreptul în mod inerent doar pentru că ea sau ea este o ființă umană". Drepturile omului sunt astfel concepute ca universale și egalitare. Doctrina drepturilor omului a fost foarte influentă în cadrul dreptului internațional, al instituțiilor globale și regionale. Politicile statelor și în activitățile organizațiilor neguvernamentale și au devenit o piatră de temelie a politicii publice din întreaga lume. Ideea drepturilor omului sugerează că "dacă se poate spune că discursul public al societății globale în timp de pace are un limbaj moral comun, este acela al drepturilor omului". Argumentele puternice ale doctrinei drepturilor omului continuă să provoace scepticism considerabil și dezbateri despre conținutul, natura și justificările drepturilor omului până în ziua de azi. Intr-adevar, intrebarea a ceea ce se intelege prin "drept" este ea insasi controversata si este subiectul unei dezbateri filosofice continue.

Human rights are moral principles that set out certain standards of human behaviour, and are regularly protected as legal rights in national and international law. They are "commonly understood as inalienable fundamental rights to which a person is inherently entitled simply because she or he is a human being." Human rights are thus conceived as universal and egalitarian. The doctrine of human rights has been highly influential within international law, global and regional institutions. Policies of states and in the activities of non-governmental organizations and have become a cornerstone of public policy around the world. The idea of human rights suggests, "if the public discourse of peacetime global society can be said to have a common moral language, it is that of human rights." The strong claims made by the doctrine of human rights continue to provoke considerable skepticism and debates about the content, nature and justifications of human rights to this day. Indeed, the question of what is meant by a "right" is itself controversial and the subject of continued philosophical debate.
