Hyperesthesia este o afecțiune care implică o creștere anormală a sensibilității la stimuli ai sensului. "Când un stimul non-nociv provoacă senzația de durere, zona va fi denumită hiperesthetic". Stimulările simțurilor pot include sunetul pe care îl auziți, alimentele pe care le gustați, texturile pe care le simțiți și așa mai departe. Sensibilitatea sensibilă la atingere este denumită "hiperestezie tactilă", iar sensibilitatea sonoră crescută se numește "hyperesthesia auditivă". Hiperestezia tactilă poate fi un simptom comun al multor tulburări neurologice, cum ar fi herpes zoster, neuropatie periferică și radiculopatii. În 1979 și apoi în 1994, Merskey, Bogduk, Noordenbos, Devor și alții au propus, în loc de hiperestezie, conceptul de alodinie, adică "altă durere", definită ca o durere care rezultă dintr-un stimul care, în mod normal, nu provoacă durere.
