Hypersthene
Hypersthena este un mineral obișnuit care formează rocă, care aparține grupului de piroxeni ortorombici. Multe referințe au abandonat în mod oficial acest termen, preferând să clasifice acest mineral ca enstatic sau ferosilit. Se găsește în roci calcaroase și în unele metamorfozate, precum și în meteoriți de piatră și de fier. Formează o serie solidă de soluții cu minerale enstatite și ferosilite, fiind un membru de mijloc între cele două. Enstatitul pur nu conține fier, în timp ce ferosilitul pur nu conține magneziu; hipersthena este numele dat mineralului când există o cantitate semnificativă de ambele elemente. Formula chimică este SiO3. Cristalele deosebit de dezvoltate sunt rare, mineralul fiind, de obicei, găsit ca mase foliate înglobate în rocile ignifuge norite și hipersthene-andezite, din care face parte un constituent esențial. Stratul labradorit-hipersthene cu granulație grosieră a insulei Paul, în largul coastei Labradorului, a furnizat materialul cel mai tipic; și din acest motiv mineralul a fost cunoscut sub numele de labrador hornblende sau paulite. Culoarea este adesea gri, maro sau verde, iar luciul este de obicei vitros pentru perle.
