Un gaz ideal este un gaz teoretic compus dintr-un set de particule de puncte care nu se interacționează aleatoriu. Conceptul de gaz ideal este util pentru că respectă legea ideală de gaze, o ecuație simplificată de stat și este susceptibilă la analiza mecanicii statistice. Un mol de gaz ideal are un volum de 22,41 L la STP. În condiții normale, cum ar fi temperatura și presiunea standard, cele mai multe gaze reale se comportă calitativ ca un gaz ideal. Multe gaze, cum ar fi azot, oxigen, hidrogen, gaze nobile și câteva gaze mai grele, cum ar fi dioxidul de carbon, pot fi tratate ca gazele ideale în toleranțe rezonabile. În general, un gaz se comportă mai mult ca un gaz ideal la o temperatură mai ridicată și o presiune mai scăzută, deoarece lucrarea care se opune forțelor intermoleculare devine mai puțin semnificativă comparativ cu energia cinetică a particulelor, iar dimensiunea moleculelor devine mai puțin semnificativă comparativ cu spațiul gol între ele. Modelul ideal de gaze tinde să eșueze la temperaturi mai scăzute sau la presiuni mai mari, când forțele intermoleculare și dimensiunea moleculară devin importante. De asemenea, eșuează pentru cele mai multe gaze grele, cum ar fi mulți agenți frigorifici, și pentru gaze cu forțe intermoleculare puternice, în special vapori de apă.
