Termenul german Kulturkampf se referă la politicile germane referitoare la secularitate și la reducerea rolului și puterii Bisericii Romano-Catolice din Prusia, adoptată în perioada 1871-1878 de către Primul Ministru al Prusiei, Otto von Bismarck. Bismarck a accelerat Kulturkampf, care nu sa extins la celelalte state germane, cum ar fi Bavaria. După cum a afirmat un savant, "atacul asupra bisericii a inclus o serie de legi pruzice, discriminatorii care făceau catolicii să se simtă în mod rezonabil persecutați într-o națiune predominant protestantă". Iezuiții, franciscanii, dominicanii și alte ordine au fost expulzați în culmea a douăzeci de ani de isterie anti-iezuiți și antimonastice. În 1871, Biserica Catolică cuprindea 36,5% din populația Imperiului German, inclusiv milioane de polonezi, care au făcut obiectul unei discriminări oficiale. În acest nou imperiu, Bismarck a căutat să apeleze la liberali și protestanți prin reducerea influenței politice și sociale a Bisericii Catolice și prin încercarea de a eradica cetățenia poloneză.
