Lac
Lacul este secreția rășină roșie a unui număr de specii de insecte, și anume unele dintre speciile genelor Metatachardia, Laccifer, Tachordiella, Austrotacharidia, Afrotachardina și Tachardina din superfamilia Coccoidea, dintre care specia cel mai frecvent cultivată este Kerria lacca. Familiile menționate mai sus sunt unele dintre cele 28 de familii de insecte și mealybuguri de scară, cuprinzând un grup mare de aproximativ 8.000 de specii descrise de insecte care sugerează plante, dintre care câteva produc produse similare naturale. Mii de astfel de insecte mici colonizeaza ramurile copacilor gazda potriviti si secreta pigmentul rasinos. Ramurile acoperite ale copacilor gazdă sunt tăiate și recoltate ca sticklac. Sticklac-ul recoltat este zdrobit și cernut pentru a îndepărta impuritățile. Materialul cernut este apoi spălat în mod repetat pentru a îndepărta părțile insectelor și alte materiale solubile. Produsul rezultat este cunoscut sub denumirea de seedlac. Semnificația prefixului se referă la forma sa de pelet. Seedlac care încă conține 3-5% impurități este prelucrat în șelac prin tratament termic sau prin extracție cu solvent.
