Un lepton este o particulă elementară, spin-1/2 care nu suferă interacțiuni puternice, dar este supusă principiului excluziunii Pauli. Cea mai cunoscută dintre toate leptoni este electronul, care guvernează aproape toată chimia, așa cum se găsește în atomi și este legată direct de toate proprietățile chimice. Există două clase principale de leptoni: leptoni incarcați și leptoni neutri. Leptonii încărcați se pot combina cu alte particule pentru a forma diferite particule compozite, cum ar fi atomii și positroniul, în timp ce neutrinii rareori interacționează cu nimic și, prin urmare, sunt rareori observați. Există șase tipuri de leptoni, cunoscuți ca arome, care formează trei generații.
