Magnetismul este o clasă de fenomene fizice care include forțele exercitate de magneți asupra altor magneți. Are originea în curenții electrici și momentele magnetice fundamentale ale particulelor elementare. Acestea dau naștere unui câmp magnetic care acționează asupra altor curenți și momente. Toate materialele sunt influențate într-o anumită măsură de un câmp magnetic. Cel mai puternic efect este asupra magneților permanenți, care au momente magnetice persistente cauzate de feromagnetism. Majoritatea materialelor nu au momente permanente. Unii sunt atrași de un câmp magnetic; altele sunt repetate de un câmp magnetic; altele au o relație mult mai complexă cu un câmp magnetic aplicat. Substanțele care sunt afectate neglijent de câmpurile magnetice sunt cunoscute sub denumirea de substanțe nemagnetice. Acestea includ cupru, aluminiu, gaze și plastic. Oxigenul pur prezintă proprietăți magnetice atunci când este răcit într-o stare lichidă. Starea magnetică a unui material depinde de temperatură, astfel încât un material poate prezenta mai mult de o formă de magnetism în funcție de temperatura acestuia etc.
