În oceanul adânc, zăpada marină este un duș continuu, în cea mai mare parte de detritele organice care cad din straturile superioare ale coloanei de apă. Este un mijloc semnificativ de a exporta energie de la zona potetică bogată în lumină până la zona apotică de mai jos. Termenul a fost inventat pentru prima dată de exploratorul William Beebe, pe măsură ce el a observat-o din bazinul său. Deoarece originea zăpezii marine se află în activitățile din zona ftotică productivă, prevalența zăpezii marine se schimbă odată cu fluctuațiile sezoniere ale activității fotosintetice și a curenților oceanici.
