Legarea metalică reprezintă forțele electrostatice atractive dintre electronii delocalizați, numiți electroni de conducere, adunați într-un nor de electroni și ionii metalici încărcați pozitiv. Înțeleasă ca partajarea electronilor "liberi" între o rețea de ioni încărcați pozitiv, legarea metalică este uneori comparată cu cea a sărurilor topite; totuși, această analogie simplistă este utilă pentru foarte puține metale. Într-o perspectivă cuantică mai mecanică, electronii de conducere își împart densitatea în mod egal peste toți atomii care funcționează ca entități neutre. Conectarea metalică reprezintă multe proprietăți fizice ale metalelor, cum ar fi rezistența, ductilitatea, conductivitatea termică și electrică, opacitatea și luciu. Deși termenul "legătura metalică" este adesea folosit în paralel cu termenul de "legătură covalentă", este mai precis să se utilizeze termenul de legătură metalică, deoarece acest tip de legare este colectivă în natură și o singură "legătură metalică" între două atomi definiți nu există. Legarea metalică nu este singurul tip de legare chimică pe care o poate prezenta un metal, chiar și ca o substanță pură.
