O monografie este o lucrare de specialitate de scriere pe un singur subiect sau un aspect al unui subiect, de obicei de un singur autor. Termenul "monografie" este derivat din greacă, însemnând "scrierea pe un singur subiect". Spre deosebire de un manual care studiază starea de cunoaștere într-un domeniu, scopul principal al unei monografii este de a prezenta cercetarea primară și bursa originală. Această cercetare este prezentată pe larg, făcând distincție între o monografie și un articol. Din aceste motive, publicarea unei monografii este în general considerată vitală pentru progresul carierei în multe discipline academice. Destinate altor cercetători și cumpărate în primul rând de biblioteci, monografiile sunt în general publicate ca volume individuale într-o scurtă perioadă de imprimare. Bibliotecarii consideră că o monografie este o publicație nonserial completă într-un volum sau un număr finit de volume, ceea ce înseamnă că orice piesă de scris poate fi descrisă ca monografie. Astfel diferă de o publicație de serie cum ar fi o revistă, un jurnal sau un ziar. Editorii de cărți folosesc termenul "monografia artistului" pentru a indica cărți care constau în reproducerea operelor de artă de către un singur artist, spre deosebire de sondajele de artă de la mai mulți artiști.
