Termenii "vulcan noroi" sau "dom" de noroi sunt folosiți pentru a se referi la formațiile create de șlamurile și gazele geo-exudate. Există mai multe procese geologice diferite care pot provoca formarea de vulcani noroi. Vulcanii cu noroi nu sunt adevărați vulcani, deoarece nu produc nici o lavă. Orice punct în care, în timp, pământul emană continuu o substanță asemănătoare noroiului, uneori poate fi numită "vulcan noroios". Vulcanii vulcanului pot varia în dimensiune de la numai 1 sau 2 metri înălțime și 1 sau 2 metri lățime, la 700 de metri înălțime și 10 kilometri lățime. Exudațiile mai mici ale nămolului sunt denumite uneori nămoluri. Cea mai mare structură de vulcan nămol, indoneziană Lusi, este de 10 kilometri în diametru și atinge înălțime de 700 de metri. Nămolul produs de vulcanii de noroi se formează cel mai adesea ca apă fierbinte, care a fost încălzită adânc sub suprafața pământului, începe să se amestece și să se amestece cu diferite depozite minerale subterane, creând astfel exudatul de nămol de nămol. Acest material este apoi forțat în sus printr-o defecțiune geologică sau fisură datorită anumitor dezechilibre locale de presiune subterane. Vulcanii vulcanici sunt asociați cu zone de subducție și aproximativ 1100 au fost identificați pe sau aproape de pământ.
