Un stat princiar (numit și stat nativ (legal) sau indian) era o entitate nominală suverană a Indiei în timpul Rajului britanic, care nu era direct guvernat de britanici, ci mai degrabă de un conducător local sub o formă indirectă, supusă o alianță subsidiară și suveranitatea sau paramountitatea coroanei britanice. Au existat în mod oficial 565 de state domne în India în timpul independenței în 1947, însă marea majoritate a contractat cu Viceretul Indiei pentru a furniza servicii publice și colectarea impozitelor. Numai 21 de state majore aveau guverne de stat actuale, dintre care numai patru erau mari (Hyderabad, Mysore, Baroda și Jammu și Kashmir). Aceștia au aderat la una dintre cele două noi națiuni independente din India și Pakistan, între 1947 și 1949. Procesul de aderare a fost în mare parte pașnic, cu excepția cazului Jammu \u0026 Kashmir (al cărui rege a decis să adere la India, dar numai după o invazie a milițiilor tribale bazate pe Pakistan) și Hyderabad. Toți prinții au fost în cele din urmă pensionați. Unele două sute dintre state aveau o suprafață mai mică de 25 de kilometri pătrați.
