Neoplatonismul este un termen modern folosit pentru a desemna o tradiție de filozofie care a apărut în secolul al III-lea d.Hr. și a persistat până la scurt timp după închiderea Academiei Platonice din Atena în 529 d.Hr. de către Iustinian I. Neoplatonistii au fost puternic influențați atât de Platon cât și de Platon tradiție care sa dezvoltat în timpul celor șase secole care au separat pe primul dintre neoplatoniști de Platon. În mod colectiv, neoplatonistii au constituit o tradiție continuă a filosofilor, care a început cu Plotin. Una dintre trăsăturile caracteristice ale sistemului lui Plotin, care a fost preluată și de neoplatonistii ulteriori, este doctrina "Celui" dincolo de a fi. Pentru Plotinus, primul principiu al realității este o subzistență absolut simplă, inefabilă, necunoscută, care este atât sursa creatoare, cât și capătul teleologic al tuturor lucrurilor existente. Deși, în mod corespunzător, nu există un nume potrivit pentru primul principiu, cele mai adecvate nume sunt "Unul" sau "Cel Bun". Unul este atât de simplu încât nici măcar nu se poate spune că există sau că este o ființă.
