Nylon este o denumire generică pentru o familie de polimeri sintetici cunoscuți în mod generic ca poliamide alifatice, fabricate pentru prima oară pe data de 28 februarie 1935 de către Wallace Carothers de la instalația de cercetare DuPont de la stația experimentală DuPont. Nylonul este unul dintre cei mai frecvent utilizați polimeri. Reprezentanții cheie sunt nylon-6,6; nylon-6; nylon -6,9; nylon-6,10; nylon-6,12; nylon-11; nailon-12 și nailon-4,6.
