Sistemul de punere în funcțiune este un mijloc de subcontractare a muncii. Din punct de vedere istoric, a fost cunoscut și ca sistemul de atelier și sistemul intern. Sistemul intern a fost potrivit pentru perioadele pre-urbane, deoarece muncitorii nu trebuiau să călătorească de la domiciliu la muncă, ceea ce era impracticabil din cauza stării drumurilor și a căilor de trecere, iar membrii gospodăriei au petrecut multe ore în treburile fermei sau gospodăriei.
