Supradozarea se referă la o modalitate de a vedea inegalitatea globală care se concentrează asupra consecințelor negative ale consumului excesiv. Există o contrapondere reciprocă a conceptului de "subdezvoltare" mai cunoscut. În teoria dezvoltării obișnuite, existența statelor, regiunilor sau culturilor "subdezvoltate" este văzută ca o problemă care trebuie rezolvată. Statele, regiuni, culturi și oameni sunt considerate "subdezvoltate" prin faptul că nu aderă la idealurile eurocentrice de raționalitate, progres și modernitate care sunt asociate cu iluminarea. Dimpotrivă, cadrul de supraexploatare pune accentul pe țările "dezvoltate" ale Nordului la nivel global, punând întrebări "de ce consumul excesiv în rândul afluentului nu este, de asemenea, văzut mai întâi ca o problemă de dezvoltare". Întrebând cum și de ce este produsă o dezvoltare inegală în lume, se poate evalua rolul și responsabilitatea Nordului la nivel mondial ca "supra-dezvoltatori" în producerea inegalităților globale. Potrivit diverselor sondaje, consumul nu pare să facă pe oameni în mod deosebit fericiți, ci mai degrabă creșterea amprentei ecologice a Occidentului.
