Policarp
Polycarp a fost un episcop creștin din secolul al II-lea din Smyrna. Potrivit Martiriului de la Polycarp, el a murit martir, legat și ars pe miză, apoi înjunghiat în momentul în care focul nu a reușit să-l atingă. Polycarp este privit ca un sfânt în bisericile romano-catolice, ortodoxe orientale, ortodoxe, anglicane și luterane. Este înregistrat de Irenaeus, care la auzit vorbind în tinerețe și de Tertulian, că el a fost discipol al lui Ioan Apostolul. Sfântul Ieronim a scris că Policarp era un discipol al lui Ioan și că Ioan îl ordonase episcop de Smirna. Tradiția timpurie care a lărgit mucenicia pentru a lega Policarp în competiție și contrast cu Ioan Apostolul care, deși mulți oameni au încercat să-l omoare, nu a fost martirizat, dar a murit de bătrânețe după ce a fost exilat pe insula Patmos, este întruchipată papirusul fragmentar al limbii copti datând din secolele 3 - 6. Frederick Weidmann, redactorul său, interpretează "fragmentele lui Harris" ca hagiografie Smyrnan adresându-se rivalităților bisericii Smyrna-Efes, care "dezvoltă asocierea dintre Policarp și John într-o măsură nedovedită, atât cât știm, înainte sau de atunci".
