Poligraful măsoară și înregistrează mai mulți indici fiziologici, cum ar fi tensiunea arterială, pulsul, respirația și conductivitatea pielii, în timp ce subiectul este întrebat și răspunde la o serie de întrebări. Credința care stă la baza utilizării poligrafului este că răspunsurile înșelătoare vor produce răspunsuri fiziologice care pot fi diferențiate de cele asociate cu răspunsurile non-înșelătoare. Poligraful a fost inventat în 1921 de către John Augustus Larson, student la Universitatea California din Berkeley și ofițer de poliție al Departamentului Poliției Berkeley din Berkeley, California. Potrivit Encyclopædia Britannica, poligraful a fost pe lista celor mai mari invenții din 2003, descrise de companie ca fiind invenții care "au avut efecte profunde asupra vieții umane pentru bine sau pentru mai rău". Eficacitatea poligrafilor este dezbătută în comunitatea științifică. În 2001, o fracțiune semnificativă a comunității științifice a considerat poligrafia a fi pseudoscience. În 2002, o revizuire făcută de Academiile Naționale de Știință a constatat că, în populațiile neinstruite în contramăsuri, testarea poligrafilor poate să discrimineze din minciuna adevărului spunând la rate mai mari decât șansele, deși sub perfecțiune.
