Post-structuralismul este o etichetă formulată de academicienii americani pentru a desemna operele eterogene ale unei serii de filozofi francezi și continentali din secolul al XX-lea și teoreticieni critici care au ajuns la preeminență internațională în anii 1960 și anii '70. O temă majoră a poststructuralismului este instabilitatea în științele umane, datorită complexității oamenilor înșiși și imposibilității de a scăpa complet de structuri pentru a le studia. Post-structuralismul este un răspuns la structuralism. Structuralismul este o mișcare intelectuală dezvoltată în Europa de la începutul secolului al XX-lea până la mijlocul secolului al XX-lea. El a susținut că cultura umană poate fi înțeleasă printr-o structură modelată pe limbă - care diferă de realitatea concretă și de ideile abstracte - o "ordine a treia" care mediază între cele două. Autorii post-structuraliști prezintă toate criticile diferite ale structuralismului, însă temele comune includ respingerea autosuficienței structurilor pe care structuralismul o pune și interogarea opiniilor binare care constituie aceste structuri.
