Precommitment
Pre-angajamentul este o strategie în care o parte într-un conflict folosește un dispozitiv de angajament pentru a-și consolida poziția prin tăierea unor opțiuni pentru a face amenințările sale mai credibile. Orice partid care folosește o Strategie de Detergență se confruntă cu problema că răzbunarea împotriva unui atac poate duce, în cele din urmă, la daune semnificative din partea lor. Dacă acest prejudiciu este suficient de semnificativ, adversarul poate considera că astfel de represalii ar fi irațional și, prin urmare, amenințarea nu are credibilitate și, prin urmare, nu mai este un efect eficient de descurajare. Pre-angajamentul îmbunătățește credibilitatea unei amenințări, fie prin impunerea unor sancțiuni semnificative părții amenințătoare pentru nerespectarea acesteia, fie prin imposibilitatea de a nu răspunde. De exemplu, o armată poate arde un pod în spatele ei, făcând retragerea evident imposibilă. Un exemplar celebru al acestei tactici este atunci când Hernán Cortés îi dăduse pe bărbații lui navele pentru a elimina orice mijloc de dezertare.
